There will be no more backroom deals and special interest payouts in Lansing. Ethics, accountability and transparency are the core objectives of a series of bills that have passed in the Michigan House of Representatives. This package of bills is being referred to as HEAT – The Hall Ethics, Accountability and Transparency Plan.
“The Hall Ethics, Accountability and Transparency Plan (HEAT) is a significant reform that helps every single Michigan taxpayer, not just a few special interests. It pushes legislative activity out into the open, removes conflicts of interest, and gives significant information to voters about how their money is being spent and by who, in advance of any votes by their elected state representative and senators,” State Representative Matt Hall (R-Richland)
Key components of the bills include mandatory disclosure of secret pork spending and all nonprofits must be verified before any vote. (HR 14)
State politicians would be banned from becoming lobbyists immediately after leaving office, including the Governor, Secretary of State and Attorney General. (HB 4062 & HB 4063)
Transparency in government is behind HB 4052 & HB 4053 which will prevent politicians and their staff from entering into non-disclosure agreements.
HR 1 grants the new House Oversight Committee subpoena power to investigate state agencies and hold our government accountable for its actions.
The final bill in this package bans our state politicians from lobbying in other states. We’re paying them to work for us! (HB 4064)
The HEAT package of bills is now in the Michigan Senate for consideration. Call your state Senator and urge them to pass HEAT and make Michigan politics honest, transparent and accountable once again to its residents.
