We have an urgent need for Republican candidates to run for office.
Here in Kalamazoo County, we have several very important elections coming up this year. The mayors and city council members in the cities of Kalamazoo, Parchment and Portage are up for re-election in November.
You may have heard the phrase “all politics is local.” It’s your mayor and council members directing tax dollars to projects that affect you and your family every day. Right now, members of the Portage City Council are considering taking away local choice and signing a contract with a single garbage hauler for the entire city. This despite an outcry from Portage residents who have said repeatedly they want to keep their current trash company.
You elect local leaders to represent you, not rule over you, unilaterally making financial decisions for your neighborhood, without giving you a choice. It’s local mayors, supervisors, council members and trustees who decide if a road gets repaved, a bridge gets built, or if a new neighborhood development gets approved.
We need strong Republican candidates to run for office in these communities. If not you, then who? We are all busy. We all have work and family obligations. Are you willing to let the democrats in Kalamazoo County continue to run the show?
Time is running out. The deadline to file your paperwork is next Tuesday, July 22nd. To get started, you’ll need to visit your local clerk’s office and ask for information on becoming a candidate. There are several steps involved here. You must fill out a candidate affidavit, get signatures on your petition sheet and file campaign finance paperwork with the county of Kalamazoo.
The Kalamazoo Republican Party office is here to help you. We can assist you in filling out your paperwork, explain what becoming a candidate entails and help you with your campaign.
If you can’t run for office, make sure you vote in your local election. Never miss an election by signing up for the Permanent Absentee Voters list at your clerk’s office.
