Kevin McCarthy, Majority Leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, will be the keynote speaker in Kalamazoo at the Republican Party’s Lincoln Tribute Dinner to be held on Saturday, May 16. The event will be held at the Radisson, 100 W. Michigan Ave, in downtown Kalamazoo beginning at 5:30 p.m.

“We’re very pleased to have such a high profile official visit Kalamazoo and join us in celebrating our party’s heritage,” said Scott McGraw, chair of the Republican Party of Kalamazoo County. “Mr. McCarthy is a strong advocate for small business and the conservative values our party stands for … his speech will be an event you will not want to miss.”

McCarthy (R-California) was overwhelmingly named Majority Leader by House Republicans in June to take over for Rep. Eric Cantor, who lost his primary and his seat in Congress.

He is the grandson of a cattle rancher and the son of a firefighter. He started his own business at the age of 21, opening Kevin O’s Deli. He said the experience gave him the insight into how government affects small business through regulation and taxation. McCarthy said he was motivated to enter public service through his experience of the tedious paperwork and overburdening taxation he endured as a small business owner.

The New York Times had this to say about him as he took over as Majority Leader in the House: “Lawmakers are likely to see a more pragmatic and inclusive leadership than Mr. Cantor preferred. Mr. McCarthy’s sensibilities and survival skills were honed during his time in Sacramento, where Democrats held a powerful legislative majority and parochial interests among Republican lawmakers were almost as numerous as those now in the House.”
